Simple LUTS have you covered as each have their own finely tuned conversion LUTS that were filmed like all the other cameras with in the Simple LUT space, using X-Rite Color Checker cards and X-Rite White Balance cards filmed entirely on location in the various conditions and using the different camera brands and the ND filter brands as each ND filter has it's own color cast and characteristics but you can read about that HERE.

The Gopro Hero 11/12/13 offer different video profiles aimed at providing flexibility in post-production, with the Hero 12/13 introducing a "Log" profile and also and the Hero 11 offering a "Flat" profile.

As well as getting the LUTS based around the ND Brands like Polar Pro, Freewell and K&F, you also get the equivalent in using No ND FILTER AUTO SHUTTER LUT PACK and instead keep frame rates the same, ideally 50p / 60/ and shutter set to Auto and of course filming in Log for Hero12/13 or Flat profile for Hero 11

The Hero 11/12/13 are included in the pack and calibrated for both profiles Neutral and PL ND filters for brands like Freewell and K&F which is sold individually on our store.

Keep your setting locked at Native for with balance, Lowest ISO, double your frame rate ( unless using No ND Auto shutter)

Included in the individual LUT packs sold separately are the NO ND FILTER AUTO SHUTTER series for FLAT & LOG profiles

Conversion LUTS included in the pack are Neutral, PL and VND LUTS, for both FLAT & LOG Profiles:

GoPro Hero 11/12/13 Settings Guidline

Here’s a simple setup guideline to ensure optimal video quality, with an emphasis on using simple LUTs and ND filters:

Set White Balance

In Protune mode in either Flat or Log profile, make sure WB is set to native. This ensures consistent color temperature, especially when shooting outdoors in daylight, providing a solid foundation for color grading with simple LUTS.

Adjust ISO

Set the ISO to the lowest possible value to reduce noise and achieve the cleanest image quality. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your footage when applying LUTS in post-production.

Adjust Frame Rate

Choose your frame rate based on the desired effect, such as 24fps for a cinematic feel or 60fps for slow-motion footage. Consistency in frame rate aids in maintaining uniformity when applying LUTS across different shots.

Set Shutter Speed

Set your shutter speed to double your frame rate. For example, if you're shooting at 24fps, set the shutter speed to 1/50th of a second. This follows the 180-degree shutter rule, giving your footage natural motion blur, which is essential for achieving a cinematic look. We recommend using 50p/60p with 1/100 or 1/120th shutter speeds, respectively, as this allows you to utilise slow-motion and slightly darkens the image, unless using Auto Shutter with No ND filter, then just frame rate is the same.

Use ND Filters

To maintain correct exposure with the above settings, use ND filters. Different ND filter stops allow you to adapt to various lighting conditions without altering your shutter speed or ISO. Choose ND filters from trusted brands that are included on our lists to ensure high-quality, consistent results. Using Simple LUTS alongside these filters enhances the dynamic range and color accuracy of your footage, making it easier to achieve a polished look in post-production.

Apply Simple LUTs

After capturing your footage, apply simple LUTs designed for FLAT & LOG profiles. These LUTS work well with footage shot using ND filters, helping to bring out the full dynamic range and color depth captured in the scene. The combination of ND filters and LUTs simplifies the color grading process, ensuring professional-looking results with minimal effort. WB is always locked at Native and Lowest ISO ensuring consistency through post-production.

 Resolution and Frame Rate

Shoot in 5K to capture the highest detail, which is standard for cinematic footage. Use 24 frames per second (fps) for a traditional cinematic frame rate, giving your footage the classic film look with natural motion blur. If you plan to slow down your footage in post-production, consider shooting in 48fps or 60fps and then slowing it down to 24fps.

It’s recommended to shoot in 50/60p with a high ND filter of ND32, doubling your shutter speed to 100/120 respectively, to achieve cinematic footage. Alternatively, you can use Auto shutter with those frame rates and No ND, paired with the supplied NO ND FILTER AUTO SHUTTER LUT PACK.

Be cautious when shooting with slow shutter speeds and ND filters, as this can cause jitter if not using a gimbal or stabilization, especially with FPV drones. In such cases, Auto shutter is recommended. GoPro offers a paid stabilising software, and there’s also the free Gyroflow software for download. For handheld shots, it’s advisable to use a LOG profile with Auto shutter. Set the color profile to Native and LOG, keeping frame rate at a recommended setting of 1/50th or 1/60th

To get the best results from the GoPro Hero 12/13 and Hero 11 when shooting in log and flat profiles, adjust your settings carefully. Set the resolution to 5.3K for the highest detail, and choose frame rates like 24p on 1/50th shutter or for slo-motion, use 50/60p on 1/100 1/120 shutter respectively. lf using Auto shutter No ND which are included and calibrated and equivalent ND stops as the other included LUTS then only your LOG or Flat profiles and frame rates stay the same

ND filters play a crucial role in optimizing your footage. They reduce the amount of light entering the lens, allowing you to maintain proper shutter speed and achieve a more natural motion blur, which is vital for high-quality video. When using log and flat profiles, applying ND filters helps prevent overexposure and maintains consistent image quality. Simple LUTS are designed to complement specific ND filters, making the color grading process smoother and more precise. By using ND filters that Simple LUTs cover, you ensure that your footage retains accurate colors and dynamic range, leading to more polished and professional results.

File Handling

The Log profile on the Hero 12/13 results in footage that appears washed out and lacks contrast until properly graded, requiring more powerful editing software and a better understanding of color grading. The Flat profile on the Hero 11, while still requiring some adjustment, produces footage that is easier to preview and edit without extensive grading, making it more accessible for casual users or those who want to quickly process their videos.

Conclusion

The key difference between the GoPro Hero 12/13’s Log profile and the Hero 11’s Flat profile lies in their intended use and the level of control they offer in post-production. The Hero 12/13’s Log profile is designed for professional-grade color grading with a wider dynamic range, while the Hero 11’s Flat profile offers a simpler, less processed look that still allows for some grading flexibility but requires less post-production effort. Also, keep in mind that the previous Hero series do not use 10-bit processing. Simple LUTS only support high bitrates found on the Hero 11 shooting in 4K and above, and Hero 12/13.

Using Simple LUTS in your editing workflow can streamline the entire color grading process, saving you valuable time while achieving professional results. These pre-designed LUTS allow for quick and consistent color correction across your footage, eliminating the need for manual adjustments on each clip.

By applying a Simple LUTS, you can effortlessly enhance the visual appeal of your video, maintain a cohesive look, and focus more on creative aspects rather than technical color adjustments. This efficiency not only speeds up your workflow but also ensures that your final product looks polished and visually consistent.
